Today was the training day I've been waiting for- our Dive Helmet Checkout! I've been fascinated by diving helmets since I began diving. More specifically, those rare opportunities that I've found myself walking across the sea floor while on SCUBA have been my absolute favorite times underwater. There have only been a few times where I have needed to carry something heavy underwater- allowing me to bounce on the sea floor like it was the surface of the moon. Today I actually got to try "moon walking" in an official and practical way. Here is a video of the beginning of my checkout dive: Its a "Director's Cut" straight off of the editor's computer!
Hey Liz -- I'm excited to keep tabs on your adventures through this blog! It's great! One question though, I'm so curious how a "dive helmut" actually works. Is it super heavy? How does it keep you tethered to the ocean floor?

Hi Angela!! Thanks for checking out my blog!
The dive helmet is very heavy. They range in weight, but ours are considered "super light" at 37 pounds! Needless to say, I have a sore neck today!
The helmet supplies you with surface air. It allows you to talk with your buddy and surface support. I've really enjoyed learning this new type of diving and I can't wait to use it during Mission 31!
